From Shtetl to Standards: The Art of Jewish Popular Song
This CD brings together standards of American popular music and musical theatre with songs from the Yiddish culture that so greatly influenced many of America's most significant composers, from Irving Berlin, Kurt Weill, and their peers in the early part of the 20th century to Stephen Sondheim and his contemporaries today.
Themes of love and loss run through all the songs in the album. Whereas the Yiddish songs reflect the European Jews' yearning for love and stability amid their hardships, the later American popular songs reflect the more carefree attitudes of people who have managed to leave many of these hardships behind.
